Thanks. Found the problem. The loud "screech" sound was simple, a bad amp cord (the one from the guitar to the amp). Also, I removed the battery and then put the same one back in and it worked. Must have been seated improperly in the battery connections. Thanks again. Everything is working...

Thanks for your response. Actually, when in the passive position, there is no sound at all, assuming that "passive" is when the switch is in the downward position (only two positions, up and down, no middle). It works when the switch is in the upward position but I have to turn the VOLUME knob...
