Just a matter of opinion, and experience.

In my 30+ years of buying basses experience, I would say you have about a 20% chance of a satisfactory, online only purchase.

It's as true as you want it to be. Sounds like big case of the "Lazies" to me. Show up with what you want to play, how you would play, and stick to your guns (with reason). ;)

I said carrots, because I generally enjoy what others share personally like stories, and some of the gig shares like cliffbass does, that and sharing music ideas and love of music. I could go without the rest of the stuff.

Try and connect better with the drummer to establish a line of communication that works for you. Indulge him, listen, learn from him, then when the time is right ad your two cents to the conversation to say what you like, what you've learned, maybe what you would like to try or just discuss...
