So when you make a long move up or down the bass, you keep your fingers pressed down on the strings and slide? Doesn't that slow you down?

I have an Ibanez SR 5 string. I thought about the elbow thing but how do you go from the e string down to the G string? You have to slide your elbow then? Doesn't that mess up the up and down motion of yore picking angle?
