Thanks for the input so far! I was returning a 4x10" cab today and decided to just "bite the bullet" and try Elixirs. They were just as expensive as some flats I've purchased, but they do feel really smooth and allow me to retain some of that jazz growl that works so well in cover bands.

I contacted DR to see if they will send me a replacement "E". I'll follow the stringing instructions carefully this time and hope for a better, or at least longer-lasting, result. I'm on the fence about the 77s...texture is odd at times for a flat but the tone is very focused (midrange punch).
