    Musicianship vs showmanship

Man, i saw stu hamm tank country hell twice. And satriani with one foot firmly placed on a monitor the whole night. At least watching fripp twist knobs during the pre-show was watching sound evolve in front of you. Then again, a ska band based across the street went on a 3 month van tour last...

    Is your gear irreplaceable?

Outside of sentimental value, i'd be fine. Even my "unique" gear doesn't have a premium in the collectors market. Then again, most of that stuff is premarital assets. Its mine. I'd be sad. But time is uninsurable. No need to be coy, Roy. Just listen to Hunraqan.

First new amp in ..... forever .... need some advice, please.

There are a lot of good options this day and age. Went to replace a WT600 and 410T with a mesa subway setup, but when i got it home and out of the box it sure looks like a PF50T over a flip top 15. Not to sound reactionary, but if you actually have a favorite local shop and the owner (or sales...

Rounds with same tension as TI's?

I found 40-100 DR ss low-riders were a bit more effort to bend than jazz flats. I would concur that a 40-100 round core to be a good place to start. Then again, sometimes you need to hit the gym, and other times its just a quick twist of 2 sizes of allen wrenchs and a screwdriver to increase...

Musicians who dont listen to music

I remember years ago, when you could hear lita ford played right after KLF, with biz markie, was not was, and the bartman. Nowadays, its mostly 50kW clear channel and occasionally a college radio station that has a block of ITM. Just looked at my iPod, and probably half the stuff has funky...

I started playing Bass because I wanted to..…..What’s your reason?

I could link to the second on youtube that i decided i wanted to be a bass player. I guess it would be like seeing earth rise from apollo 8 and wanting to get into aerospace and not be along just for the ride. Plus, there was no competition in high school and little in college. Strange thing in...

Would you rather play out with a great bass and cheaper amp or cheaper bass and a great amp???

I wish they had amplitube when i was first starting out. The school had amps in the music room, and years later the alternative services crowd had low volumes and decent installed PA support. 250 dollars of fretwork/setup and maybe a pickup swap, and a bass is mostly a bass. And quilt...

Why is it hard to keep rhythm when playing alone?

I was in this band once, and in the original "jam for soloing," i'd get the nod and everybody else would stop playing and stare at me. It was elementary school, mrs blaileen, The Wall, and Statler and Waldorf all rolled into one. Exposed bass still terrifies me as much as reciting times tables...

    Communication is hard

As a kid, i would have sit around getting piqued, maybe giving the "are you kidding me" look. And then after awhile, you've seen it all. Its the band leader's concern, and you are a guest of the band leader. At least an emotional support animal isn't involved. Landlord caught the person with a...

    Gear Demo Pet Peeves

"Hey guys! Its..." And i can read the product spec sheet quicker than even the micromachine man can read it. Click ahead 5 minutes, to find 10 seconds of actual playing. Or just as helpful, 5:10 of noodling. And put clothes on when taking pictures of shiny things like chrome volume knobs...

The longest you've gone without buying a new bass?

I was over 12 years in recover, and ended up overpaying for a distressed parts bass with TV logo hanging on the wall of the amp repair shop. Ended a 25 year drought without a P-Bass, too. Sounds so nice, with that distinct sonic footprint, but I can't decide on flats or rounds.
