    Need advice on fretless

Ibanez has the SRF series as well for $1000. I'm not a fan of the Bartolini MK-1s, but other than that the bass is pretty solid all around. The Sire M7 is a cheaper option, and people told me good things about it. I've never played on one though. Brand fretless basses are pretty rare overall...

Best online courses for raw technique

I'm considering getting one of the paid courses available (still undecided on SBL or talkingbass, but it seems both are similar on content and price). I see that these and most other well established online courses have a lot of material focusing on music theory, grooves, improvisation, etc...

Pickup & preamp recommendation for mid-heavy fretless sound

Definitely roundwound strings. Plain ebony fingerboard at first, but I'm not settled on the epoxy coating yet.

Pickup & preamp recommendation for mid-heavy fretless sound

Hey, I'm building my first custom 6 string fretless bass, and I'm undecided on the electronics. The tone I'm looking for is that aggressive, hot, mid heavy tech-death fretless sound. Think Dominic Lapointe, Linus Klausenitzer and early Digiorgio. So far my frontrunners are: - Aguilar DCB +...

New Darkglass Compressor: The Hyper Luminal Hybrid Compressor

I'm on the fence about trying the Hyper Luminal. I use an MXR M87 which is at the same-ish price range, and already has tons of customization. It delivers what I want (low threshold/high input, medium ratio compression) with decent quality, without sounding too special. Is it worth the switch...

    Darkglass & preamp dilemmas

I use the AOU for clean and distorted tones. The clean tone is very good IMO, mainly because the graphic EQ has great frequency points, and you can dial on any tone you want. It is not a groundbreaking product if you use it primarily for the clean tone, but it is definitely good. The distortion...

    Ampeg SCR-DI - Yamaha Question

That's the only problem with the pedal. It's too bad that it's a deal breaker if you happen to use a high output / active bass. The clipping is just horrible, and the -15dB is frankly not an option, because I can swear it messes up with the tone. I've sold the pedal and bought another preamp...

Talk me out of buying a Rickenbacker

It's overpriced, overrated, tone is unidimensional, quality control is bad and inconsistent.

String recommendation for 6 string bass - lighter tension

The DR set actually has weirder gauges. They are 30-45-65-85-105-125, opposed to 32-45-65-80-100-130. Lighter on the B and C strings, heavier on the E and A. It was a friend's suggestion, based on nothing but his feeling, which is completely biased in itself. I've bought the GHS set to try out...

How many bpm can you play?

120bpm on 16th solos and melodic riffs. A little less with extremely complex stuff. 200bpm on straight 16ths, but you definitely lose clarity.

String recommendation for 6 string bass - lighter tension

My other bass is tuned ADGCF, but I'd have to check the gauges since the strings came with the bass. They do feel noticeably less stiff though, on both hands. While I do agree with you on everything, and I'd love to get a 4 string set and 2 singles, or even 6 singles, the problem I have is that...

String recommendation for 6 string bass - lighter tension

I've used the D'addario EXL 170-6 for as long as I can remember, but recently I've played on a downtuned bass and I've realized that lighter tension feels more comfortable for me. So, I'm looking for some other options that can have a similar tone to the EXL (balanced to bright), but with a...

Left hand technique on a 6-string

Thanks for the pics, they've actually helped a lot. I'll try the elbow position, I tend to play with my elbow close to my waist and I think it'll do the trick. Exactly the problem which I've faced; i simply can't reach adjacent frets on the lower strings even if I stretch my fingers to the...

Left hand technique on a 6-string

So, I'm trying to correct my technique and keeping my wrists straight to avoid pain. So far, I've managed to correct my right hand technique, but my left hand is annoying me. I've watched the "Safe Left Hand technique" video by Adam Neely, and I've been trying to follow the whole "thumb...

Ampeg SCR-DI and SansAmp VT Bass DI

The Ampeg really hates hot pickups; I've had severe clipping issues with it. I fixed it with the -15db switch, but it ended up killing the tone so much. I've since sold the pedal and never looked back. The tone is good if you are looking for that Ampeg bite. The scrambler/overdrive circuit is...
