Hi folks. Got a second hand fretless with some "fretting sounds" while sliding between certain notes. Wondering if it might be a good idea to give it a quick sand to see if that sorts it out? There are some signs of string wear on the board. Or should I try cleaning it first? Doesn't seem filthy...

Hello folks. Just put a set of flatwounds (Rotosound 77, 40-100) for the first time on my G&L Jazz bass. More or less straight away, the D and the G sound like old strings. Slapping and popping on these two sounds very similar to how it would on a fretless. The E & A still sound very bright...

I didn't do anything with the nut before, because it played pretty well with the old strings on (but there were kinks in them from the frets.) Just luck, I guess. I'll try sanding the nut down a bit. How much distance should there be from the fingerboard where the first fret would be?

Roundwounds. I've never tried flats before. Well this is the first time I've restrung a bass haha. I had heard that roundwounds were the ones for the fretless "sound" anyhow.

I'm getting a hand cramp just thinking about that. Looks like I'll have to get used to it. I've been a on/off bass player for years, but just started on fretless, and thought I'd be able to have the strings pretty much on the board. Not to be, I suppose. Cheers!

Really? That's quite reassuring then, I don't think mine is quite as high as that. Looks between 1-2mm on the low E, but the others have to go a bit higher, just going by looking at the saddle heights. I seem to be able to get the low E down further than the other strings, the higher strings...
