Double Bass Preventing the bass from sliding while sitting

I have used a variety of items when in a pinch. If you can't find anything useful in your gig bag, try the rubber door stoppers that you may find in the place.

Double Bass Simandl 30 piano parts?

I saw it on IMSLP a second ago. Curiously, I was actually looking for the solo part because I misplaced mine. Enjoy: http://imslp.org/wiki/30_Etudes_for_the_Double_Bass_(Simandl,_Franz)

Double Bass End pin accident in the middle of concert

Hi all, This may not pertain a lot to playing technique, but I think it has everything to do with orchestral playing, and I am wondering if anyone has experience in this. In the unlikely but conceivable event of an end pin malfunction (e.g. the locking mechanism fails and the bass suddenly sinks...

Double Bass A particular page turn in Tchaikovsky 2

I once put a bruise on my stand partner's hand when I momentarily messed up the bowing. That may have something to do with it?

Double Bass Knowing when to come in

I don't trust my conductor to remember to cue me for such insignificant punctuations. What I do is I count, and I look for movements around me (fellow section mates) to see if I have gone off track.

Double Bass A particular page turn in Tchaikovsky 2

Also, I have seen tricks like dog ear on the lower right of the page turned by the bow. Is that reliable?

Double Bass A particular page turn in Tchaikovsky 2

Hi all, So my group is playing Tchaikovsky 2, and in the last movement, before the coda, our conductor decided make his statement by cutting the fermata very short. The site (attached) sits across a page turn, so we only have a fraction of a second to turn the page before launching into some...

Double Bass Picture of glasses in orchestral parts

My choir conductor hand this ongoing joke, where he'd say "put a pair of 'skepticals' on it if you keep missing it." The new guys would be very confused until the veterans explain to them that he meant "spectacles." As for the orchestra, since our conductor had this habit of changing his mind...

Double Bass In there a technique

I'm not sure what your question was, but for starter I'd say I have developed the technique that I'd pluck with the lateral side of my middle finger while keeping the bow grip with the rest of the hand. (I play french bow)

Double Bass Details regarding stage etiquette/stage presence

As an extension to the first question, would stowing and pulling out the bow be very visually conspicuous? Like, should I try to keep the bow in hand most the time, and not put it away unless I have several pages worth of rest?

Thanks. The last bit sums up nicely what I have always feared but couldn't quite put into words.

Double Bass Details regarding stage etiquette/stage presence

I should try that in the next rehearsal. By the way, I have also noticed that in some orchestras basses have their "shelves" on which they rest their bass during intermission or their bow and rosin and other stuff during performance. I almost wish I have that luxury, too.
