    Double Bass Andrea Spada Basses

Shocked to hear—had just wished him a happy new year a few days before. Always so kind and grateful when talking to him. I didn’t know him long... began talking about building a bass mid-year. The outpouring on his social media is touching. After a few phone calls with him you could tell he...

Double Bass So Gerold’s cooking up something new...

They amplified very well in a musical pit. FOH gave big thumbs up as well... just in acoustic rehearsals (Classical and Musical) I felt like I was being buried--if not careful when that is happening, they are particularly easy to 'crush' and get little response from.

Double Bass So Gerold’s cooking up something new...

When I first put my set on, I had surprising volume I thought... I had a rehearsal and was fighting the whole time to hear myself... I love the feel and sound of these, but volume was an issue on my bass... Curious if a sound post adjustment and maybe a lighter bridge/without adjusters might...

    Double Bass Creone da Silva

I have one en route to California right now-- It has been stuck in Customs since the 10th--once it arrives I will report back.

Double Bass So Gerold’s cooking up something new...

How is thumb position for the Basso/Orchestra tuning strings? I have an order in on these and am excited-- Hoping to be able to work excerpts and solo pieces (at orchestra tuning) on these without losing something in either register... the dream!

    Double Bass Making practicing fun

David Allen Moore had a very applicable post today, describing a few things that the thread has addressed. Type 1 fun vs Type 2 fun is one of those and a nice framing of the idea. Available on his Instagram (Login • Instagram) and Facebook (David Allen Moore):

    Double Bass Making practicing fun

This can hit everyone, especially university students, particularly hard... I struggle with this as well. More and more, I realize that there isn't an end goal that's achievable. You'll always be working to better where you're at. If we can't find joy in that process and journey, then it isn't...

Double Bass Salt and Pepper vs White hair, can this be (generally) right?

Age of hair and Rosin build-up can also be confounding factors—especially bows under trail that might have seen a few different types. The gentleman who does my rehairs shies away from salt and pepper for the issue mentioned above... he also felt that black has a tendency to be more brittle...

Double Bass Interesting Extension issue and experiments

Thought I'd report back here. Because the board didn't completely separate from the neck, the consensus was don't make more work (removing board, routing and inserting a CF reinforcement, potential geometry issue with the extension). Board was glued down and I picked it up a day or so later...

Double Bass Interesting Extension issue and experiments

I never got videos up-- When I got home I looked things over again. With a flashlight, I found the tiniest little gap/hole in the corner where the FB, Neck, and Nut meet on the G string side. I couldn't close it or enlarge it by pushing/pulling on anything, but figured it looked like and issue...

Double Bass Interesting Extension issue and experiments

Sorry to hear about the poor timing for you there… No visible gaps or movement in the FB—it didn’t cross my mind and I got started down a different rabbit hole. Tricky to get clamps on at this angle without impeding the E/C string—I can’t checkout the response across the other strings, but...

Double Bass Interesting Extension issue and experiments

Am I looking for the relief/glue line to be straight in doing this, or making sure the E/C string can vibrate and checking for the response? The 'heavy' vibration starts from about 8 cm south of the nut and is present all the way up, through the pegbox/extension/scroll. As far as I can tell...

Double Bass Interesting Extension issue and experiments

There seems to be a touch of relief in the neck... it is strung up with Passione mits and a stark long E/C—not the heaviest set of strings around by a long shot. Around 105cm string length. Photos below with a straight edge—at first I thought it was shadow, but the straight edge is flush and...

Double Bass Interesting Extension issue and experiments

Happy New Year everyone! The vibrating feels like it begins in the last few inches of the neck—relatively suddenly—maybe 7-8 cm/3 inch below the nut/pegbox. Beggining to think the fingerboard might be coming up, though I can’t feel any play when pressing... While I don’t have any play or...
