Rickenbacker 4003 modern Hi-Gain vs Toaster

Thanks for posting that @shughey. That's night and day compared with mine. It sounds like a totally different pickup. Exactly what I'm after but mine simply doesn't have that much bite. I'm completely baffled!!

Rickenbacker 4003 modern Hi-Gain vs Toaster

That's an interesting point about the backing track. The backing is a bit quieter in the mix on my clips which might have the effect of knocking it back a bit but EQ is flat throughout. I agree there could be several factors affecting the bass including how hard I'm playing, strings (fresh...

Rickenbacker 4003 modern Hi-Gain vs Toaster

I measured the existing pot values and the neck tone pot is 320k. The bridge push-pull tone pot is 450k, much higher than the stated 330k which IMV is a good thing. I disonnected the cap from the neck tone pot and rewired it to a 500k pot as a test. The difference between the standard 320k pot...

Rickenbacker 4003 modern Hi-Gain vs Toaster

@sloppy_phil yes I haven't got round to looking at the pots yet. I know it comes with 330k all round but I've also heard that tolerances are pretty slack. As an initial test I think I'll just try taking the neck tone pot out of circuit by disconnecting the cap (minimal de-soldering required) and...

Rickenbacker 4003 modern Hi-Gain vs Toaster

Can you post a clip of yours? It would be interesting to hear the difference between our 12k hi-gains. If yours has more clarity, even with flats, then maybe there's something not quite right with mine. I appreciate all the variables in play here, but I don't think I'm doing anything with my...

Rickenbacker 4003 modern Hi-Gain vs Toaster

Well, I agree my Geddy technique could do with a bit of work lol! But I was hitting the strings pretty hard and it's clear that the core sound of the 2019 hi-gain just doesn't have the crispness and bite of the '90s and toaster. My info on how Ric pickup winding has changed over the years...

Rickenbacker 4003 modern Hi-Gain vs Toaster

Here's my stab at the same clip with a 2019 Ric hi-gain neck pickup. It lacks the bite of the '90s hi-gain which I'm pretty sure is down to the new pickups being overwound to 12k compare with around 9-10k for a 90s. I wonder why they felt the need to do that? It adds a bit of body but dulls down...

Rickenbacker 4003 modern Hi-Gain vs Toaster

That's interesting about the freq response and tighter low end through a DI vs an amp. It could be part of what I feel my pickups are lacking. Thanks for the track info, I'll dig out my interface and have a go.

What was the Rush track BTW (I beg forgiveness for my ignorance!)?

Rickenbacker 4003 modern Hi-Gain vs Toaster

Hi Michael, thank you this is excellent and exactly what I was looking for! To my ears the hi-gain has more mids and the toaster is deeper and somehow more open. They both sound great and quite different to my modern 12k hi-gain which is somewhat darker. Although, I haven't tried recording it...

Ric 4003 - Pickguardian bridge pickup mounting plate question

I'm thinking of getting a flush mounting plate/bezel for my 4003 like the Pickguardian one or similar (may make my own). But a flush mounting plate will have 1cm less headroom for the height adjustment spring. See pic below. The dotted red line indicates the approx level of the underside of the...

Thanks for the heads up on the Creamery toasters and Nordenbocker, will take a closer look. I'm also tempted by the Classic Amplification Ric set - [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]
