    Why do folks cut strings?

Enough turns worling down to get the correct break angle at the nut and then not so many that they stary overlapping. This angle affects tension, amd how the string and nut interact therefore affects feel and tuning. Most people wouldnt notice but it does contribute to getting the right setup.

Looking at used basses is just so depressing lately...

You only NEED one bass. It should have all the notes you need. If you cant make it sound right then try improving your technique through thousands of hours of playing. If you can be bothered with doing that it doesnt matter what you play anyway!

is it worth buying a 5 strings ?

Play both. With a 5 make sure you have amp and speaker that can do it justice. Also you have to learn to mute the B and E strings when not playing them socyou cant just anchor on a pickup. Practice a lot more on the 5 as it is very easy to switch back to a 4. Give it a good year before deciding...

Looking at used basses is just so depressing lately...

Couldnt quite take the plunge so I ended up buying about £400 of tools, really nice wood, watched A LOT of youtube videos and made my own for fun. It turned out to be awesome and the USA Fender Jazz Plus V I took the parts...

    Double-thumbing: Really hard on thumb/fingernail?

It is essential to know what a pattern will sound like BEFORE you play it. Music is a sound not a shape. The aim is not to remember shapes and patterns but the sound they make. If you know the sound you want your fingers will have no choice but to obey! It is like words - you dont remember the...

The mystical and mysterious double slap (not double thumb)

Abe Laboriel does this too. There was an instruction video he did that had this in.

    Double-thumbing: Really hard on thumb/fingernail?

Dont worry about the strings. I double thumb with 135-50 on five string. I find it easier as you get a lower non buzzing action with heavier strings and much better tone that sounds more consistent across the strings. The key is to be relaxed and play through the strings. I have small callous at...

How can I get the Bass Player in our Originals Band to create/play groovin' bass parts?

I would say hire me... but you can't buy what you can't afford. Really though, guitar is so different to bass and he is probably struggling with being so exposed. Playing one note at a time with no distortion, reverb, chorus etc to cover up the tiny mistakes is feckin hard! On the subject of...
