    Garry W. Tallent (Springsteen's Bassist)..... Under-rated?

Amazing. Not the same band that played the Isle of Wight in 1970 of course, but Roger Daltrey, Pete Townshend, Simon Townshend, John 'Rabbit' Bundrick, Pino Palladino and Zak Starkey are an incredible force of maximum r'n'b live. Next to the Sugarcanes, the greatest live rock band I've seen.

    Country Bass, something infuriating!

My favourite country electric player is Glenn Worf. He's all over records produced by Frank Rogers and Frank Lidell in particular, but can be heard across a bunch of country albums doing stellar work. For upright, you can't go past Byron House (currently in the Band of Joy) and Dennis Crouch...

    Garry W. Tallent (Springsteen's Bassist)..... Under-rated?

Tallent is definitely underrated. A fantastic player. My friend Jim Lauderdale has had him playing on a few of his records, most notably as part of a wonderful band Jim dubbed 'The Dream Players' - Garry, James Burton, Al Perkins, Glen D Hardin, Steve Sheehan and Ron Tutt. The record is called...

    Favorite Power Trios?

JOHN MAYER TRIO Unfortunately, they never toured down under, but I have seen what I believe to be the only performance of John Mayer Duo, which was just Mayer and Jordan but still sounded really cool. CREAM Especially those later live versions of White Room with Clapton on Firebird. THE JIMI...

Bass players with great stage presence

THE OX. How can you beat standing rock steady with a skeleton jumpsuit on. Guy Pratt has tremendous stage presence. Easily the most physically dynamic member of Pink Floyd. Of course, Mr McCartney, and Jenny Lewis. But I feel it's expected of bassists who are also the frontpersons. Not...

Best Bass Player you've ever seen Live

James Gillard (the best bass player in Australia). I've seen him well over a hundred times and he still knocks me out. Also a great harmony singer, acoustic guitarist and producer. I saw Willie Weeks with Clapton back in 2009. He was just so tasteful I couldn't believe it - played a gorgeous...

    Dream Band

Vocals - Elvis Costello. He can do rock, ballads, R&B and country with equal skill. Rhythm Guitar - Steve Cropper. The most tasteful guitar god of all time. Lead Guitar - Jeff Beck, circa Jeff Beck Group V1. He remains to me the most exciting conventional lead guitarist of all time, based...

Best Bass Player you've ever seen Live

I saw Palladino with The Who last March. Absolutely incredible - I was in the front row between him and Daltrey, so I could hear the sounds straight out of his rig. Punchy, rich, warm tone and stunning playing throughout the set - I hadn't realised how complex the parts on Anyway, Anyhow...

The Who's Sound: Pino vs Entwistle

It's a totally different band now - it just happens to feature two of the same members. The original Who featured Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey as the rhythm section, John Entwistle as the lead guitarist and Keith Moon as the piano player. They just happened to be playing unconventional...

Entwistle fans: What's your favorite Who bassline?

Anything he played in the studio up until 1981 and everything he played live up until about 1972. I'm in the minority here, but I really don't like Townshend or Entwistle's live tones after the Tommy tour - and what's worst of all, they don't mesh properly. They did get their stuff together...
