    Active '51 Style Precision?

I have a couple Squier CV '50s basses that I put DiMarzio Tone Zone Strat mini humbucker rails in. Easy, drop-in modification. No hum, rich lows and crisp highs... hotter output too. I typically use one of an assortment of outboard preamps, so no real need for onboard actives. An active preamp...

    Did I kill my amp?

I have to ask, Jon... Did you buy that amp used at the Manch. Music Mill in around and about 2023? I traded a GK MB210 in toward a couple NEOs back then. If so, you might have my old combo. The combo amp I had was starting to sound fizzy at higher volumes before I traded it. Just curious.

Can you use electric guitar pickups in a bass?

Yes, a bladed Strat pickup works. I put a mini humbucker in two different '50s Squier Precisions. The pickups dropped in perfectly. Cheap E-Bay $15.00 jobbies made in China... Both sound great. No hum and very hot. Like Gopherbassist said above, "A pickup's a pickup."

What bass players do you think aren't mentioned enough?

Listened to Joe Jackson’s “Look Sharp” album today for something different and I was utterly blown away by Graham Maby’s bass playing. I’m a fan!

The Modified BEAD 4 String Bass Club

Yeah, they’re blades. No idea what brand… They were ~$25 on ebay and they sound excellent! I needed blades because the bridge didn’t line the strings up with the poles on the DiMarzios and it just bugged me. I’m more satisfied with those cheap-o blades than the Ultras. That bass rivals all my...

The Modified BEAD 4 String Bass Club

I’ve turned my homemade Jazz into a B-E-A-D tuned bass and I LOVE it! Strange tho’ that the E, A and D strings sound very different in the different stringing positions. I can’t really explain, but they sound more fundamental… deeper, I guess. I pointed it out at a jam session and the other...

    New Tech 21 XB Driver

Great info here! The suggest settings in the manual just weren’t working for me and I was getting frustrated. Got to the point where I was combining various suggested clean channels with various suggested drive channels out if desperation. Admittedly, the Entwistle one is crazy incredible, but...

    New Tech 21 XB Driver

Hey Tim, I just received an XB Driver a couple days ago and was wondering how you find the right setting for your mids? I seem to recall a video of yours a while back where you're dialing them in by playing either ends of the neck (lowest to highest), comparing volumes and adjusting? Do I...

2008 - 2015 Fender Tony Franklin, Fretted Precision, yes, fretted

A good friend of mine has an ‘07 fretted Fender TF in natural for sale. It’s not listed, but he’s looking to get $1000 for it. It’s in great shape, except the pickups aren’t stock and the soldering looks like I did it 40 years ago when I was 18! Has original case. For a grand and the upgrades to...

The callus > blister > open wound > callus cycle?

Interesting testimonial. I tried Rotosound tapes years ago and took them off almost immediately after installing them. I really should’ve given them a chance. I tend to favor those seventh fret Es and As too; So what you’re saying here has me interested in giving them another shot. Thanks!
