Not sure how to exactly describe it. The other three strings have a very smooth, pleasing tone. They sound fantastic. But the B has a harshness to it that is so unlike the other strings it stands out as being very different. There were a lot of weird harmonics going on when I first strung it up. Moving the string farther away from the pickup helped a little, but the pleasing tone just isn't there. I'd never heard of "wolf" notes before this thread. Possible that is what is going on? Whatever it is, it just doesn't sound nice.
I just happen to use 760FL and ordered a B set last time I needed them. Thinking I might try this at some point. Maybe those just aren't good strings for this bass? Maybe I need to try some a low tension set? It could very well be a problem with the setup. As i said, I used a set of nut files to get the strings seated correctly. I checked to make sure the stings were not twisted. And then worked with the sting hight over the pickup. Nothing seemed to help the B string get to the smoothness of the of other strings.
I think I had a similar problem with the 5 string La Bella set, like the B had some weird overtones and at the same time super dead sounding. I switched the B for the Chromes .132 and have been much happier, the brighter sound of the Chromes seems to balance out the change in tone that comes with a string that thick. In fact I’ve been liking it so much I’ve switched my other bass to BEAD as well, but this time with D‘Addario roundwounds
Can confirm, chromes and the regular XL rounds work great on my BEAD P bass. Next i will go with the NYXL’s because i have used them on other basses in the past.

Just ordered the .132 B string. If that doesn't work, I think I will try the la Bella low tension flats.
I put together a BEAD bass because I don't gel with five stringers. I used an old-ish Falcon P-bass body and a roasted maple (or something) Harley Benton J-bass neck with pickups from a Harley Benton kit bass. I had a hi-mass bridge and put some new pots and a .22 capacitor in it. Sounds great!
I had some problems with my B-string as well, but I guess filing the nut some more and making sure the loose tuning peg was tighter fixed the issue or I'm used to it now.
I have fairly thin set of strings on it, so I often forget what tuning I'm playing in.

I’ve turned my homemade Jazz into a B-E-A-D tuned bass and I LOVE it! Strange tho’ that the E, A and D strings sound very different in the different stringing positions. I can’t really explain, but they sound more fundamental… deeper, I guess. I pointed it out at a jam session and the other musicians just didn’t get what I was trying to articulate. It’s probably mentioned earlier in this club; I’ll have to take some time to read through. I’ll take a number if there’s room for me, please!
