What does a dead flat wound string sound like?

There’s a very good chance that the E string has been mounted with a bit of a twist in it. Labellas are notoriously sensitive to small mounting errors and will sound very dull. Detune the string completely and pull the ball end free by an inch or so, enabling the string to find its natural...

And here's the house that belonged to the man who built that barn to raise his belted cattle.

Fair enough. Here's a few more shots. It's a stunning building inside an out: an architectural masterpiece. It's on an island that you can only access for about 8 hours a day, driving across a sandbar with a sort of gravel road that's covered most of the time by tidal waters.

What does a high mass bridge do?

You need to think about the bass on a "slippy" strap as being an object that can rotate about its centre of mass. Whether it will rotate depends on the sum of the torques (rotational moments) acting on the bass. Each increment of torque is the product of the local mass and the distance between...

Amps with low or no fan noise?

This Acoustic Image Clarus SL kicks out nearly 700 watts into 4 ohms but has no fan. The internal heat is bled out through the external housing—which I've never found to get very hot, but perhaps I'm not pushing it hard enough!

    Best jazz bass under $1000

Do you just want something with the double single coil configuration or do you want the Fender J-shape etc.?

    Ibanez Portamento Club

Wacky side road…has anyone experimented with adding a double bass film-type piezo pickup to an electric bass, say between the tailpiece and the body? These are mounted between a bridge foot and the top on a DB, so they’re used to some pretty significant static pressure when mounted for sensing...

    Yamaha BBP35 lower strings

The NYXLs were not the problem with my BBP35, I'd tried several other types during the time it was with me. Despite careful set-ups and various experiments with string passage, saddle geometry, etc. I could never get that particular instrument to give me the sound that one would hope for given...

What are your top 3 favorite body shapes (other than the common ones?)

There's something elegant about the lines of the Peavey Cirrus basses that I've always loved, particularly that upper horn.

    I'll genuinely miss Stephen Colbert...

So true...meantime here's the best picture I could pull off that YouTube broadcast of "Hello Goodbye". It seems pretty hefty and nice detail at the corners. I don't know exactly how tall Endea is and she seems a bit hunched over the beastie in other shots.

    I'll genuinely miss Stephen Colbert...

Ha! if you mean the ones out of Wil DeSola's shop, I should at least recognize that one since my LaScala hybrid is my main bass.

    I'll genuinely miss Stephen Colbert...

For my part, I'll miss seeing Endea Owens playing upright. She's a fine player and so much more than a member of that fine band. I was interested to see her playing in the "Hello Goodbye" snippet with Paul McCartney. It was the first time I got a good look at that bass and, boy, it looked big...
