Would you be offended if a band asked you to play a P bass?

If the sound that the group is hoping to achieve and I agree as a bassist, I would. Otherwise, I would use my Warwick or Gibson EB-2

Why did you quit a band?

Way too much drinking on stage.

What is the best bass Leo ever made?

It's a toss up between a Jazz and Precision, but definitely one from when he still owned the company.

    Bassists of the '60's Club.

Hey all, I was a rhythm guitarist (a dime per dozen in the late sixties) when my friend Duane asked if I wanted to play bass in his blues band. Duane played bass in his father's polka band but decided to play blues guitar and sing. Duane showed me the basics, lent me his Gibson Thunderbird, and...

If you could only play one bass brand forever

I have played many different basses over the years. I have a 78-year-old Schroetter for acoustic purposes. I have a 48-year-old Gibson EB-2 with Varitone that has a fast neck and wonderfully deep tones. However, if I could only take one bass with back to the Pleides, I would take a Fender Jazz...

The best one went on the high-end Gibsons (fifteen coats of finish); medium-high on the standards; medium on the Les Paul Juniors, etc.; medium-low on the...

How many colors of basses do you own?

Gibson Cherry Red, Dark Brown Natural Wood, and Fender Light Blue

    Simple basses

I use my Gibson EB-2 (c. 1972) a lot. The varitone switch allows for four quick changes in tone between songs. However, I only use two of them most of the time.

Why do we still use amps?

The low E at c. 40 Hz produces a 50 foot wave out into the audience. There's the real bottom feel.

OK, this might be a stupid question but I’ve always been overly curious.

More of a sweatguard that protects the finish.

What's the best compliment you've ever received about your playing?

I jam four times per year with drummer Maruga Booker, who has an extensive pedigree. I listen to his strokes and accents and play off of him. A simple sincere smile of appreciation says it all to me.
