    Same thing with my Epiphone Jack Casady bass (which I recently sold). While seated, I could angle it upwards so the first fret wasn't so far out there, but standing up, hanging on a strap, that first fret was a long reach indeed because the bridge was so far neckward. Great sound, though...

    Yes, the 34" pushes the nut farther away, because the other end of the 34" -- the bridge -- is located so far "forward" towards the neck of the bass. On a P bass, the bridge is back towards the back of the instrument.
