Yes I can get a nice growl of it and for a mellow I sound I play with the thumb. I love the amp. It could be warmer I agree but when I gig looking for a warmer sound it can get muddy at high volumes. If recording I think there are warmer sounds out there

Never come across NL4s. If an amp has NL4s how do they connect to the speaker, which is designed for NL2s. Do you still have all three amps? Why did you get all 3.
