    Underappreciated Bassists in famous bands

It's a euphemism, meaning R&B cats can play much better than rock bassists.

    Underappreciated Bassists in famous bands

Almost no love for R&B bassists, figures. Nevermind they can play circles around any of the rock bass players listed on this thread.

Reasons to tell people why you're no longer in a band

Well, if you're trying to do something musically different than EVERYTHING else around you (i.e. rock), you jettison everybody you play with and just play for yourself. Of course, in Rhode Island all these losers will talk poopie about you but shag 'em anyway.

    Underappreciated Bassists in famous bands

Here's a couple more: William Allen, criminally underrated bassist from Roy Ayers' '70s-era band and Gary King, studio bass player involved in Bob James' '70s recordings; both fantastic musicians who should get their due.

Who's your "I just don't get it" artist?

Zappa. He was a brilliant composer, but the tempo shifts in his music are jarring to me.

Read or ear ? What do you prefer ?

Reading. Too many people don't bother to read, that's why so many covers sound like poopie. If you trust your ear, chances are you will play wrong.

    Why do you play fours?

Because the best jazz, funk and R&B music in history had bass lines written on four strings; anything more is extraneous.

Why does mordern pop music suck?

As one of the few fans of R&B on this site, I concur. What passes for funk and soul today is largely a joke, too many R&B songs ruined by rappers, devoid of horns and keys, singers who don't have/use a wide range in their vocals. There are some good singers/groups today: Robert Glasper, Jill...

    Why do you play?

I play bass because I enjoy it; can't be to join a band because I'm a funk player and here in Rhode Island 95% of the musicians are rock 'n' roll/metal/blues players. Hence the reason I don't play out anymore; too much music w/no groove.
