I've got a Gallien Krueger 800RB

I've seen this on a few amps but I don't entirely see the point. Forgive me if this seems like a stupid question, but is there some advantage or disadvantage to using it? What makes it significantly different from the gain or volume control? Thank you.

I have Gallien Krueger 800RB. It has one amp rated at 100W into 8 ohms and another at 300 W into 4 ohms. The high amp at 100 W isn't confusing to me. I just don't know how things work on the Low 300 W amp. The 300 W low amp has 2 output jacks and it's looking for 8 ohms in each jack. I...
