I solved that problem in my J bass by slanting the pickups... pickups closer to the strings on the "G" side; farther away on the "E" side. Not what I'd call an elegant solution, but it works.

Flats just sound dead and lifeless to me. I discovered RotoSounds about 30 years ago, and haven't been tempted to try anything else. JMHO, YMMV, and all that.
