Is a bass player really necessary?

No jazz players here? Is there no concept of an independent voice in that register? Organ trios are fun to listen to but the bass part is just enough to support the harmony. But a bass player adds melodic counterpoint because he's not over-multitasking. I really don't care for groups with...

Is older heavier gear getting cheap since light weight is the fad?

BTW- Class D amps are here to stay, not a fad. You can get so much power for cheap it makes copper and iron power transformers along with big heat sinks obsolete. And for bass you can cover some of the Class D's faults with more power.

Is older heavier gear getting cheap since light weight is the fad?

I'm an upright player, almost exclusively, and had a 71 Ampeg B-15 which I restored and took out on a few gigs and really liked it. But at 60+ lbs I found out my back didn't love as much as my ears did. I sold it for a very good price, after inflation probably what it cost brand new then my...

Double Bass adjustable soundpost – Anima Nova

I looked online but didn't find it. I had some design ideas for an adjustable sound post 30 years ago but didn't pursue. But it wouldn't be that hard to make out of wood. But the first one would take a lot of time. $750 for a stick! Whoooeeeey!

    Double Bass Endpin Socket Taper?

Thanks. It works great and the block is much sturdier with the homemade collar in it. That has been my main bass for the last 6 to 8 years. It's my opinion after 51 years of playing basses and fixing them that neck and end blocks should not be made from spruce. They are main structural elements...

    Double Bass Endpin Socket Taper?

When I reconstructed my bass I had a good endpin which I'm still using but the hole was distorted. Not having and end pin reamer I drilled out the end block with a Forstner bit, I think at 2" dia or so. I used an adjustable cutter and cut a succession of holes, that corresponded to the 1:17...

Is it "cooler" to play a 4 string bass?

I didn't sift through all 16 pages of replies but on what pages I did read no one asked, "What does the music call for?" The question of "Cool" for me would relate to the question "Am I properly equipped to play this music?" Most -99%- straight ahead jazz is played on a 4 string upright. One...

Double Bass The official un-official Thomastik Spirocore versus D'Addario Zyex thread

I'm surprised that so many feel the Spiros have a long life. I quit using them in the 80's because they were shot in 6 months or so. I had to take them off, clean them, flex them and put them back on but the overtones were starting to go out of tune. Have they changed for the better? Rumor: I...

Double Bass The official un-official Thomastik Spirocore versus D'Addario Zyex thread

I have had a set of Zyex lights on my bass for several years - about 3 or so - but alas they kind of died. The overtones were just too out of tune with the fundamentals. But I liked the sound and they record well. So I'll get another set. I put some Heliocore lights on but the D and G are just...
