I think the new 15's don't get enough credit. The old school ones were pretty lumpy sounding. But the newer, high-end stuff is quite respectable.

I totally hear what you are saying about the tweeters. This is a tough one too because they are so much more efficient than the woofers. You can pad them down.... but still the highs are being 'launched' at us in an unfriendly manner. No doubt!
