One thing I've always done is put the amp through hell before it leaves my bench. Depending on the specs and design I'll run 1KHz sine @ 50-80% of full power for 30-45 minutes into a load cell. If it doesn't fail then, it probably won't at the gig. It's worked for me for the past 35 years.

Deenah, do you have the blue board or tan board version of the amp? I've got both schematics. Matter of fact I just redid a blue board not long ago.
