    Multi-Track Recording?

Having used a Yamaha AW4416, 16 track digital recording desk with built in recorder, for more than 20 years I am about to upgrade to the new Allen & Heath CQ20-b for studio work and live. It offers full 20 input, 4 effects, 8 outputs, built in wifi for Ipad, smart phone or pc live mixing. It...

Naked recordings without bass (jamtastic). What do you groove over?

I recently came across some YT songs I have jammed over on CD. These recordings are quite sparse and have space for bass and harmony vocal (glad the neighbours can't hear the vocals...). Do you have tunes you fill the blank spaces in?

First project: Folk Bass DIY upright

I use a kevlar drum pad on the drum skin, under the bridge. The bridge is between 7cm and 8cm tall. I use nylon cored, low tension strings. The old site I made to help others may not be working at the moment but there are some images here: Home Bass There is a Facebook page for the bass.

First project: Folk Bass DIY upright

Thank you for referencing me! Here are some of my observations and solutions. My neck brace was cut with a 7degree angle for the neck join. Also I allowed for some movement in setting the angle by using the top fixing inside the drum as a pivot and adjusting the bottom fixing to get the...

First project: Folk Bass DIY upright

From my experience and understanding of physics I believe the depth of the drum is what gives power to the bottom end, deeper the better. I have looked at adding a horn or folded baffle to the rear of the drum to help with bottom end. The easiest way is to join 2 drums together and I have tried...

    Advice on hosting jam nights

Is this for punters to listen or is this for musicians to play? I have organised a regular blues session in 2 different pubs over the years. Up to 20 musicians in a circle all playing together, mixer amp with space for a bass, 2/3 mics, plus 4 more inputs (I control the volume). Mostly acoustic...

Noble DI as a preamp vs. channel strip (UA 6176, LA-610, Neve, etc.)

I would want a channel strip, or two and a a good computer interface. You can get more than that in a modern digital desk. I use an old Yamaha O1v, a Focusrite LS56 as the front end on a mac based system but it can be done with less gear and better integration with current desks.

One more question on the whole P Bass recording debate

The Yamaha desk I have used most stores settings within each song file and unless I start by loading a default song (which I would have created) and specify 'current' settings to be within a new song there will be no access of my stored settings. There are some presets for dynamics but these are...

It would need a very short hex but they can be moved with a pair of needle nose pliers gripping the knurled outer.

Funnily enough the picture made me adjust the bridge screw which was slightly loose. I can see what you mean about the E string but don't think it can slip out of the block. The poor thing is a bit of a case queen and I need to spend some time getting rid of the rust off a few screws and play...

Scandals in the Vinyl World and the Search for the Perfect Sound

In my living room I send everything through a modern receiver amp to a pair of DC Tannoys. Imac, Playstation, Minidisk, Sky, Thorens TT, phone, Ipad and even Bluetooth from my studio in another part of the house can all be played through it.

    When is a bass "vintage"?

Vintage is the brand name of a second rate guitar manufacturer... ... and specifies which year grapes were harvested and made into wine... it's in the word!

    Acoustic strings

If your bass has a piezo pickup I would reiterate this: I use them on my Washburn AB20 and on the bass in my avatar. Not cheap but worth it and they have lasted years!
