    The death of jamming

First, I love jamming/improvisation in which someone starts a groove, and the others join in, and it winds on as different people take the forefront and control the jams for a time, and then hand it back to the others, and someone else takes it up, and so on. A bassplayer can do so many powerful...

    The classification of terrible bandmates

    1) Well, I was in a band in which the drummer's true talent was to get together with bandmates individually, buy them beers, and bad mouth each to the other. In effect, in doing this, he planted mistrust among members, and installed himself as each of the individual's confidant. This talent was...

What do you do besides playing music?

EXERCISE ! Hyperactive kid > Over Active adult. Run by myself, & with Super Active dog (Rottie/Malinois mix - high energy from the Mal' side, extra power from the Rottie side), weights, HIIT. And no, I don't do it to live forever. I do it because I'm addicted to it. Weekend dinners with the...

How did you start playing bass

By the way, in the '80's, when I started bass/vocals, we were doing Journey, Toto, Foreigner, & Beatles covers, so that is why it took a while to get the basslines down. These days I work them out really quickly I am proud to say, and I work the vocals out almost simultaneously. These days I...

How did you start playing bass

I always considered myself a singer first, and I also learned some piano, and then guitar. There was a guitarist who wanted to work with me as a singer, but we could not find a bassist at all, and so I bought an Ibanez Roadster (Precision copy), got some lessons from a jazz bassist (who went on...

    Happy 20th Birthday, TalkBass!

Drummers with solid tempo, consistent kick/snare combinations SHOULD be invited (just sayin'). Maybe some guitarists who actually HAVE good rhythm, too.

Best 80’s bass players to admire sonically

Duran Duran was on the cover of all the fan magazines at the time, & I ignored them. BUT when I heard, "Rio", & "Reflex", all that changed. John Taylor is a BOSS, and DD were actually a band that took chances with chord structures, and melody lines. Anyway, here are SOME of my faves : * Verdine...

players who are ashamed of having "entry level" brand instruments...

Hey, there, As for me, I assess the sound quality of a bass as follows : The balance of sound should fit the genre of music requirement. For instance - Rock, Dance, Modern Pop, Reggae, Country, Soul, and Acoustic Folk, ALL require DIFFERENT bass sounds. However, ALL the bass sounds should have...

GOOD BASS + GOOD DRUMS = GOOD BAND - PERIOD.

Hello, All ! To me, it seems as though the bass player & drummer must ALWAYS be the, "adults in the room", meaning that their combination must ALWAYS be solid, and accurate for the band or song to sound proper. Meanwhile, other musicians, notably singers, and guitarists can get away with...

players who are ashamed of having "entry level" brand instruments...

I agree with you - MOST great songs have relatively simple basslines. However, I was just talking about the consistency of the QUALITY OF THE SOUND you get from a great bass guitar (which usually costs more money), than a just-okay bass (which sometimes costs little money).
