Who was your inspiration to play bass?

I started on guitar but wasn't inspired. Then at a high school pep rally, i heard a friend's band playing Grand Funk songs, and felt the gut-rumble of bass for the first time. It made me feel good. I bought a used Hagstrom for $25 and learned all the GFR songs I could. So it was a high school...

Is it weird to not want a solo?

Most recently, I've been playing upright with a folk/alt-rock trio. With either electric or upright, I've usually avoided soloing, because it never really fit my idea of the bass's role in a band. However, we do one cover song now that is kind of a darker tune, and as we worked out our...

The Geddy Lee Jazz Club Part 2

Thanks! I played a multi-band gig at the World Cafe earlier this year, and a couple of the other bassists came up to look at the "vintage" bass. I think they were disappointed when I pointed out that it was actually just a 15 year old MIM Fender. Both the GL and the P-bass go to every electric...

The Geddy Lee Jazz Club Part 2

I missed this thread the first time round. Okay, here's my 2002 Geddy Lee, stock and unmodded, sitting next to my 1995 P-bass - a different twin of the GL. My two favorite playing basses.

Double Bass Question about make/model of a DB

Thanks for the info and link! I.m pretty certain from the pictures and price that it's not a solid carved instrument, but good to know that it's also not from a manuacturer known for shoddy construction. And with a label referring to "West" Germany, I know it's survived at least 21 years...

Double Bass Question about make/model of a DB

Yes, I saw those links, but was confused re: "G.A." vs. "T.G." It doesn't seem the initials would be interchangeable, but . . . . I gleaned little information from them.

Double Bass Question about make/model of a DB

I've done some internet searches for info on this bass, but come up with zero. It's a T.G. Pfretzschner, "handmade in germany", with an additional "Made in West Germany" label. So, it's probably at least 20 years old. :) This picture was sent by the seller. The other pictures show a fairly...

    Double Bass Its pretty surreal...

I find that when I spend some time away from this forum, the GAS abates. For a while, anyway. Then again, I've been splitting my GAS between bass and keys for the past half-year or so. :hmm:

Which side of the drums do you set up and why?

Stage right is my preference, and I've been there in practically every band I've been in for decades. In my current electric band, we set up for rehearsal with me to the drummer's left, and at the end of the evening, my right ear hurt from the snare hits that I usually don't hear coming from...

How to Play with Chrome Pickup Covers?

When I dig in, I pluck close to the bridge; for mellow and deep, pluck nearer the neck. Everyone knows this, right? When I use the pickup as an anchor (digging in), I'm not plucking above the pickup. So for me, the cover doesn't get in the way. It also served as a substantial thumb anchor...

    A very unpleasant situation :(

Hey, I think I've worked with this guy before! Oh wait . . . my guy was in his late 40s. Relax. No guilt. Move on.

    Attn Call of Duty fans!!

My partner got the "hardened" edition, because it has extra maps, zombies and a COD outfit for her avatar (*why does xbox dashboard look like Wii now?*). When she entered the code for the outfit, she got this message: "This outfit is for a male avatar. Please give it to a male friend!" She...

    Traded my EUB . . .

. . . for an old Roland D-50 (plus a couple hundred bucks). Just because I wanted to do something different, to learn how to program a hardware synth. Because you know that eventually, I'm gonna try to run my bass through it!

    Attn Call of Duty fans!!

Yeah, my partner pre-ordered. She's debating whether to go to the midnight release to pick it up. I'm saying yes . . .
