Low tension rounds for a modern sound

TI Jazz Rounds are the slackest strings I've EVER played. They can also make a mellow PJ totally evaporate in the mix. But your pickup placement ought to counteract that. You might really like them.

    Frets settling in after shipment.

Well if fret sprout is sideways, I don't see how it can resolve itself.

How light is too light? (Neck dive)

The single pivot at CG on the Steinberger L-2 was the best arrangement ever for prevention of neck dive. It was good for the back, too. The Fender Go-Around Waist Belt was even better for the back. It put the weight on the hips.

    In praise of inexpensive basses

$80 used Peavey Milestone II, a pig in a poke I bought used off GC. It's 8 lb, 2 oz. I added an EMG P I found in the junk box and an old JF344 set. Now eyeballing the dirt cheap, super small Peavey Max 112 II for gigging amplification. It has a rep for making a P sound like a P and even working...

How light is too light? (Neck dive)

I had a neck-diving J that I fixed by moving the strap buttons. First I put the horn button on the back of the horn where it served as a pivot. The bass would not dive when suspended from this point. Then I moved the bridge button 2 3/16" toward the floor. What this did was allow the strap to...

    Frets settling in after shipment.

Yeah, just read somewhere that someone else had fret sprouting problems after shipment that resolved itself. Must be somewhat common.

OLD DUDES(AND DUDETTES)of 50+ years and new gear.

Forget the "good old days." Had to sell all my magic old school gear to pay for the divorce from hell, but planning to take advantage of the cool new toys. Amazed at the progress that's been made since I started playing in 1967. It keeps getting better and better.

    Frets settling in after shipment.

For the time being, I'm wildly guessing that varying humidity and temperature do something while the bass is in transit, and it works itself out over time.

    Frets settling in after shipment.

This is the second bass I've had shipped to me that had a high fret that I couldn't tap or press down, but that settled in and fixed itself after lying around the house for a few months. Anyone else experience this?

    Best foam/mute for P Bass

Yeah, Jamerson had the ashtray on in every photo I've seen, and it sounds like he left the foam strip in place. And yeah, palm muting is painfully slow. Prestia's superpower is muting with both hands. Plus he must be all fast-twitch muscles. I got to talk after a gig once while he was wrapping...

    Best foam/mute for P Bass

The ashtray with the foam stuck above the bridge sounds and plays way different. I owned a few Ps and Gibbos and a Rick and only the P mute sounded musical to me. Also it's the magic to getting the fretless P to sound like an upright, that and the flats that came on it, late 70s I think. Just...

    Best foam/mute for P Bass

Yes. The old mute was cut at an angle at the G string. Anyway, at the G string end, cut from midpoint along the end to say 5/8" along the neck edge (you are cutting the edge closest to the nut, and the cut is perpendicular to the top of the bass). But remember to cut with the adhesive up because...

Any Hartke VXL hacks out there?

Love the sound. Played many a SansAmp and definitely prefer the VXL. Only problem is it's noticeably noisy. Has anyone run across fixes for this? Chip subs or something?

What makes a cabinet sound boxy?

I wish I could describe it better, but some cabs sound boxy, and I hate it. What makes them sound that way and how can it be avoided?

    What's your cheap gig rig?

Got invited to a band. Paid $80 for a Peavey Milestone II (added GHS Pressurewounds and an old EMG P) and borrowed an Ampeg B-50R. It'll have to do for light gigging. What dirt cheap gear are you gigging?
