I keep coming back to good old XL's. They may not excite, but they also never disappoint.

D'Addario's spectrum is showing Chromes being mellow compared to other D'Addario strings, like nickel and steel roundwounds. Chromes are considered bright when compared to other flats.

Sadly, the days of getting them for $70-$75 a set on Amazon seem to be over. I finally gave in and ordered a set for $89 after weeks of price-watching. And I do feel like they're so good they're worth that price. It was just nice to get a deal.

If I could only play one type of string, I'd take rounds for their versatility. But I'd miss the hell out of flats; they have such a satisfying feel and tone.

Somehow I missed this a year ago, but I've had the same experience across different brands of nickel-plated steel strings. D'Addario, DR's, Boomers, Slinky's. It's like the E loses its zing super quick, while the rest of the set stays bright for weeks. The difference is most apparent when I play...

As I'm playing I'll hear little static-y 'pops' coming from the amp. The wiring in my house sucks, so I'm used to some noise, but the 'pops' are too distracting and only happen with coated strings.

I got to try these in beta. Seemed quite good to me, but I didn't stick with them long because they're overly noisy on my basses, just like Elixirs. If I wanted a longer-lasting string, I'd have to stick with XT's (which are perfectly quiet for me, I guess because they're 'treated,' not coated).

There are a LOT of good options, but if you asked me to pick one I'd say you can't go wrong with DR. I've tried Sunbeams, Hi Beams, Fat Beams, Lo Riders, Nickel Lo Riders, Pure Blues, Legend flats... All super high quality, just depends on what kind of feel you like and how much brightness you...

Trying these on my Jazz bass. They feel phenomenal under the fingers. They intonate easily and accurately. They're brighter-sounding than I'd like (especially the G, holy crap is it loud and proud) fresh out the pack, but so are most flats. Looking forward to playing the crap out of them and...

I think the closest to rock AJ ever got was the jazz-rock fusion records with Al Di Meola. Loved those albums as a shred-obsessed teenager, still love 'em now.

Still loving the custom 105-80-60-45 set on my Jazz bass. Honestly, though, it took a while to get used to the D string not feeling so tight. I'm a pretty frequent D'Addario user so I'd just grown accustomed to it.
