    Bassists of the '60's Club.

I started playing bass pre Beatles, playing Surf Music and Ray Charles. When the Beatles appeared it started an outbreak of opportunities for live music. We all benefited. I'm lucky to have played shows with many of my favorite bands in the 60s. One I wish I had played with is the 60s version of...

How Disparate is Your Musical Taste?

As I write this I am listening to the youtube mix for Lady Antebellum. I listen to everything but lately Cuban Son, Peruvian Criollo, Tex Mex, Andean Folk, Bluegrass, 50s & 60s rock, Jazz mostly from 50s and 60s, Columbian Cumbias, Latin American Rock, Americana. I play now mostly Classic Rock...

For the old folks: what did you pay, back in the day, for what is now a "vintage" amp?

My first bass was a Fender P-bass which cost around $160.00 in 1963. Then in '65 I bought a Hofner violin for $360.00. After several different set-ups I settled on an Ampeg B-18 portaflex and ran it in line with a B-215 portaflex. Awesome sound. I think I paid $150 for the B-18 used and $350 for...

wives vs basses (shhhhh! don't let them see this thread!)

My wife isn't very interested in my playing, but she seems to have an issue about buying new basses. My secret is always buy basses painted similar to existing ones, therefore I have 2 black basses and 2 tobacco sunburst. As long as they are all not out of the cases at the same time she doesn't...

When Did I Become Old? (Long Post)

I'm 71, never thought I'd ever be this old. I started listing to Jazz in early 60s so I got my education on a lot of Bebop. In my teens played R&R and Motown. These days I don't hear much new music I like in except for the local Jazz station. What I play is not what I listen to. For past few...

    Sponge?

My first bass was a Fender P bass I bought in 63 or 64 that had the sponge built in the bridge cover. These days I'm playing a lot of Funk and usually stick a foam pad under the top 4 of my 5-string and let the G free so I can get more ring when I pluck it.

How long to adjust to a 5 string?

I started on bass in 1963 and never touched a 5 string until 2 years ago. I was living abroad and couldn't bring any of my basses back so I decided to buy 5-strings when I got back to the states, now I have 4. It took about a year before I could look at the strings and not have a brain fart. Now...

Do you dance when you play bass?

Depends whether the meds are working.

Have you ever played someone's famous bass?

In the fall of 1965 we played the Pro Football Hall of Fame Ball with The McCoys. Hang On Snoopy was #1 at the time. Randy Jo Hobbs let me play his Hofner violin. I was using a 63 P Bass at the time and suffering from a shoulder injury so I bought a Hofner and used it for several years as my...

players who are ashamed of having "entry level" brand instruments...

The best sounding and nicest playing bass I ever had was a Epiphone Accubass I picked up for $50.00. The neck was great, I sometimes took it off and put it on my Fender Jazz bass. I did make a new body out of swamp ask that really improved the sustain. Now I am playing a couple Epihone EDM-5...

Did you ever attempt to play Upright Bass -- how did it go?

I bought a Paladino EUB last year and it took about 6 months to get to a place where I felt comfortable taking it to a gig. I use it for Folk, Country, Jazz and some blues tunes. I have never taken it to a RnR gig , but if I could find a Rock-a-Billy band I would love to do that. Still not as...
