What kind of strings do you use?

Primarily Stringjoy bass strings(Nashville, TN), both nickel and steel roundwounds on an untreated macassar ebony fretless fretboard(6 string fretless bass). DR Pure Blues and Fat Beams also. The DR'S of the same gauge as the Stringjoy's feel "heavier"(due to their patented compression winding...

Bolt-on or neck through - what's the real difference?

I play fretless bass almost exclusively, and to my ears, there is a noticeable, audible difference between a neck-through design and a bolt-on. The bolt-on and set-neck connections to the body of the bass deliver a different kind of resonance than the neck-through does; the "mwah" sounds more...

I have played an unlined fretless bass of one kind or another since 1978. I prefer an unlined fretboard. Lines or no lines, the issue of correct intonation is resolved with a good set-up and lots of listening and fine-tuning of technique. Great attention to the details and nuances of...

    New Sound

Great answers from everyone! I'll chip in with this overtly obvious point/question: what upright sound are you going for? Guys like Brian Bromberg and Tom Kennedy use very low action and interesting pickup combinations(Back in the day, Kennedy use to have electric bass pickups at the end of...

    Fodera Stainless Steel Strings ???

Believe it or not, I'm using a set on my fretless. I love the sound and feel of the strings. I get the fretboard (ebony) sanded about every 6 months by a professional luthier. And, yes, they do last!
