Please recommend me a decent, inexpensive fretless to experiment with

I bought a Fazley fretless P bass for under £100 last year. Sunburst alder body, maple neck, rosewood ish fingerboard. P and J pickups, two volumes and one tone. The P pickup poles fell out of plastic cover but a bit of foam underneath sorted that. Sounds great. It was from Bax music in Europe...

How bad (or good) was your first bass?

My first bass was a Hondo 2 Rickenbacker copy. It was really good. Traded it in '79 for a brand new Fender Precision bass. Sunburst and rosewood fingerboard. Second worst bass I've ever had. Just behind a pair of Squiers.

    Best Female Singing Voice

If it hasn't been said yet, I just have to go with what for me is the best female vocal I've ever heard. Eva Cassidy doing Somewhere Over the Rainbow. Perfect and truly divine.

is it worth buying a 5 strings ?

I've used 5 string basses since the 90's and I've had quite a few. My pride and joy is a Warwick Fortress Masterman from '97. Yes it's heavier than a Les Paul but not when wearing due to perfect balance. My main basses now are all Ibanez SRs and they are spot on 5's. Slim, comfortable necks and...

    Bass mod regrets

I wanted to try a fretless, so bought a really cheap Fazley P style with P and J pickups. Sounds and plays really great. But wanted to upgrade bridge and pickups. Changed bridge for Fender high mass bridge. What a waste of time. Looks cool but not as good as the stock cheapy. Pickups, well...

You get one song to listen to for the rest of your life. What is it?

So many to choose from. Kid Charlemagne, Red Baron, etc. However, the song I never get bored of has to be Neil Sedaka Laughter in the Rain.

What Is Your Favorite Bass Solo of All Time Regardless of Style???

Vail Johnsons solo at Montreux Jazz Festival late 80s or early 90s. Kenny G Midnight Motion. Brilliant. Casiopea, Domino Line Live. I think it was Tetsuo Sakurai. Also love Jeff Lorber Fusion album Wizard Island, track Can't Get Enough. Short punchy solo. Excellent album all round.

Ouch...bass player called out on stage for being out of tune.

Poor singing, poor excuse. Never in 40 years of playing have I heard a singer sing off key cause of an out of tune bass. She had much louder chordal instruments to listen to. You keep going. What she did is demeaning and unprofessional. Barely hits the chorus on the other version shown as well.

Mesa D800 rattles off cabinet to oblivion

My Eich T900 and T1000 never move on my Barefaced 4x10 cab. TheT900 is very small. However, Eich provide a mesh cloth the size of each amps footprint should you need to reduce slipping. Perhaps Mesa should do the same. Also, Eich put magnets under the amps. Their cabs have a metal strip for the...
