Simple question: What type of sound did the musicman phantom coil help make?

If I may rephrase the question then... After using the phantom coils properties to nullify hum, what sound does the Sterling Bass single coil position create? Is it a fad or a really everyday functioning staple of the Sterling Stingray sound?

What is the best passive bass guitar you have played in your life?

My Fender 60s body/70s neck fender PJ mutt. White body faded into ivory is light and resonant, maple neck is solid and easy to play.

    Ibanez RD505

Not gonna believe it. I grabbed the RB505 for $129, threw some rounds on it, and played it all night at the gig. This is gonna be fun. Gotta work with the pickup heights and figuring out that pull coil. But it felt very solid without being heavy, And output was precise. All pan positions...

    Ibanez RD505

I do enjoy trying out new basses, but I could see that if something like the RD 505 did basically all the sounds that I like: HH Modern brutal Slap, JJ Classic Slap, single J Jaco and solo, JJ finger style, MM Sadē, and a more blunt P sound from a MM/J mix, them I could see not having as many...

    Ibanez RD505

I played one of these in a Pawn Shop. It has shown some signs of wear, but I am intrigued with the layout. It's definitely a very good J/MM bass. Never thought to pull up on the ratio nob. I'm thinking on it now, but it was REALLY inexpensive in the store. So I'm on the fence.

Simple question: What type of sound did the musicman phantom coil help make?

My first thought is a quiet powerful jaco barking tone. Was that the idea sonically? I see now that the ray 35s have a filter rather than the phantom. What does the filter supposed to do?

Help me understand dummy coils in MM style pickups.

OK, what does the dummy coil setting do to the sound output sonically? Jaco punch quiet jazz pickup? less for slap and more for bridge bite?

Valerie June's bass player---what bass is this?

Nice look, and very nice presence in the Austin City Limits video. Pickups are.....?

Going from 4 to 5 (merged threads)

Another easy solution is simply take off the B string. Sounds crazy but this way you can really see if it's the b string holding you up or the spacing. If you make your fingers just solve the spacing issue first, then it will be easier later to "add" the B string later. Get used to your...

Sterling by Music Man SUB Ray4 and Ray5, Part 2

Recently have moved back to 5 strings so I traded my ray4 for a honeyburst ray5 chiefly as a backup bass. Then I take the thing in to my main gig and it totally blew my other 5 away. How do they get the B string to sound so full? I'm really impressed, especially on a single bridge pickup...

Going back to a 5er but need wide string spacing.

Here's the Precision 5 from 2003. Note that the neck pickup is just slightly moved toward the bridge.

Going back to a 5er but need wide string spacing.

We'll I found something I really liked and wanted to post it. I found a 2003 Squier Precision 5 string which was made in Indonesia. It has a precision body but with Jazz pickups. Wide spacing, basic electronics, simple to mod, and familiar ergonomics. Sounded good even with the stock pickups...

    Bill Lawrence - R.I.P.

I was planning to buy some j pickups from him this week.. Guess it was just not in the cards. Rest In Peace. May I add that the obvious, death sucks.

Going back to a 5er but need wide string spacing.

Well I found a 2003 Indonesian Squier Precision 5 string. Wide spacing, Precision body and pick guard, and with two jazz pickups. The neck pickup is a little closer to the bridge than the standard jazz position. I like how it sounds. All passive. Very good start. seems I can mod as needed...
