Bill Lawrence - R.I.P.

That man knew more about the science of magnetic musical instrument pickups than anyone else I've ever read or spoken with. He was legendary for not only taking phone calls from just about anybody, but talking your ear off about the science (as opposed to the voodoo and superstition) of pickups. He knew exactly why something like alnico versus ceramic magnets mattered, and why it mattered. I still remember one 45 minute phone call with him about 10 years ago.

I just talked w/ Becky yesterday and it sounds like nothing is going to change as far as current products go.
As far as "hand made by Bill" , I think Becky and the other lady have been making everything for quite some time. I think Bill's health has kept him out of production for awhile.
And Bill, God love ya for being a great innovator, a no bullsh-t guy and a true legend in the electric guitar world. You cared more about the sound than your pocketbook.
I salute you!!!

TopCat and I have been some of the loudest supporters of Bill in the P-46 thread - this came as a shock, though given Bill's age it's not really a surprise. I am sorry that I only discovered how awesome he was recently.

My P with the P-46/J-45 combo has been my main axe ever since installing them about a year ago. Fantastic sounding pickups. Bill - my thoughts and prayers are with your family.

RiP. He certainly was the most innovative pickup designer. Not in my bass yet but two of my guitars wear his creations, even if not his direct make though.
I'll always support his drastic sounding machines, and hope his name will go on as Leo's, could the guitar industry gives the achievement he deserves.
Thoughts to his familly and friends.

I ordered this P-46 for my FSR honeyburst P a day or two after Bill passed, totally unaware of the sad event. The pickups showed up in my mail a couple of weeks later. :bawl:

Now I feel like these are kind of special, and perhaps they deserve a better bass and a better bass player. They'll sit in a drawer until I can provide those two things.

Don't stick 'em in a drawer, man - put 'em in a bass and rock out! That's the best way to pay tribute to the man, IMHO
