From the looks of it you are on the right track in the rehearsal space you have. I wouldn't have thought that you have much playing live experience. So perhaps some performances are going to help you get a confidence about you. Get a singer, or perhaps a couple of them, and start experimenting...

I would have thought that regardless of the people running the event, the cause would counter that 10 fold. Oh well.
