    Teaching self to read notation?

In all honesty, it's a tough chore WITH lessons. I started playing piano as a kid, so 'real' notation was all there was, and in retrospect, I'm very grateful for it. I admit, although I can read music fluently, tablature is still easier to read for me as far as bass is concerned, and I'm...

    NAMM 2012

Yes, unfortunately... those were the days. However if passes are not going to be used, I'm hoping against hope the names could be changed to ours; we have done this in previous years to swap out people that could not make it to those that could.

    NAMM 2012

Hi all, I had a pass to the NAMM 2012 show along with three friends, but we got blindsided by the trade organization and had our membership pulled. Of course this is after flights and hotel rooms were booked. Are there any kind souls out there will extra passes they won't be using? I'm...

Can the 9 volt lick test kill you?

The current will go through the path of least resistance. If the terminals are very close together, like the 9V battery, the current will go from one terminal, across the surface of your tongue, and to the other terminal. You won't be able to measure any current flow anyplace else, like your...

    Backup Gear?

Hehe, didn't mean to kick the hornet's nest. It's just I'm not comfortable yet with my new tube amp, so it's more about making me feel better than a belief that the amp isn't reliable... Plus this gives me an excuse to by an ampeg microrig or an mb200.

    Backup Gear?

Always a backup bass, always extra batteries, always extra cables. Been using a solid state amp, so no backup amp, but if I start gigging with my new vintage SVT, I'll probably have a backup amp as well. Coreyfyfe, I like the cut of your jib.

Anybody ever buy equipment without trying it 1st?

I bought my GK without playing through it first, but I knew what it sounded like. I'd be extremely wary about buying a bass that way; to me, the tactile feel of a bass and the neck is very important. I would certainly play a friend's then buy one, but I would be extremely reticent about buying...

Finally took the plunge - 1970 SVT

Yep, just ordered, with a knob. I'll let you know how it all turns out. And johnk, I hope you have that picture of your SVTs as your computer desktop. Better than a pic of the Grand Canyon.

Finally took the plunge - 1970 SVT

The pot (and knob) look much newer than the others, so I'm guessing one of the previous owners had a problem with it, and and replaced the whole pot himself without bothering to match it. It's not a d-shaft pot , so I can't get an original (or original looking) replacement knob. For $15 worth...

Finally took the plunge - 1970 SVT

Thanks everyone. Turns out the new knob isn't a d-shaft, so I'm going to have to replace the whole pot. Oh well. Pretty sure the other knobs are original. After I fix that, I'll think about getting a new headbox, which is a great idea. I didn't surf around fliptops long enough to see those...

Finally took the plunge - 1970 SVT

I'm been messing with the idea of getting an old SVT for a while, been playing GKs mostly, and a 1970 SVT with 6146s came up, and I pounced. Sounds great, and everything works. I got a heck of a lot of information by searching here through old threads, so thanks everyone! My question is...
