Um, I haven't had the problem the OP describes and I live in Canada too. Where exactly are you that you can't get to a Long and McQuade? They aren't the greatest, but they can order in nearly anything and don't typically make you pay up front for it.
The only stuff I haven't been able to try out first is stuff that typically can't be tried out first anyway because its available online only, like Avatar, Carvin, Acme, etc. If you look up a manufacturer of a product you're interested in trying out, find out who their Canadian distributor is and you might then be able to try something out in person...
