  • Used Minwax urathane varnish 100% straight. Repeated the sanding/varnishing 3 times, getting easier on the pressure as progressing. On the 3rd cycle take only enough to get it smooth with minimum removal using the high 1500, 2000, and 2500 wet finish paper. The last is just a polish cloth. I didn't McQuires wax it. I may though.
Decided to make a GLarry GIB JJ 5 fretless. Got white polystyrene 0.5mm thick sheets from Hobby Lobby. I wet the neck and heated the frets with a soldering iron, used a fret removal tool and popped them out w no chips. Cut 1/4" strips 3" long and trimmed each down to the size of each fret groove. I traced the arch of the fretboard on each with a pen and trimmed it to almost flush.

I bought 0.5mm thick Poly Styrene sheets from Hobby Lobby to fill the fret grooves. It fits perfect! $4 bought enough to do 3 basses. I crazy glued a bead along each after it was trimmed and inserted in place. I sanded the polystyrene down using a 14" radius neck sanding block. It sanded right down easily. Beautiful white lines. Got the whole neck sanded smoothed w dry 220, 400, 800, then wet 1500, 2000, 2500.
