Speaking of tailpieces.... Here's an easy mod so you can actually adjust the intonation on the saddles: Just replace the Phillips screws with hex-heads, and you can use a right-angle Allen wrench.

Don't remember what was used in the 4002's. I installed the Shure transformer myself in final assembly. The XLR was the standard Switchcraft unit as on the 4002. I've never really used the internal Lo-Z, but have run the 1/4" Hi-Z into my Radial J-48 DI. You've got a point of using a quality...

The writing in the cavity has varied over the years. Typically the model number was taped over before spraying. Sometimes initials or names are found from the wood shop, sanding or final assembly, but many times they were sprayed over.

The 4000's were marketed as a simple economy version of a 4001, more sophisticated than the 3000's, but still with the 4001 feel and vibe. I always felt that the lack of binding was more comfortable and had an elegance about it.

681 here! Thanks. The output of the EMG Hz electronics go simultaneously to the 1/4" mono jack and a Shure transformer to the XLR. Had to route out some more under the pick guard to make room for a second 9v battery, to run the EMG at 18v.

Thank you W&W.... you've jogged my memory. That's right that there was no cap on the 4000's. As I recall, we felt that it seemed a bit louder, maybe more presence.

Dr. Cheese, great thread here. I think that contentment is wildly underrated. Important to keep perspective while we wrestle w/GAS. As others have said.... “Many play better than me, but none have more fun”. I aspire to this. Thanks man
