A "transamp" is probably a good start. His tone is based on a heavy overdriven sound. Without overdrive, it really can't be reached.

A bit more output, yes, with greater bass response and, IMO, more rounded highs. Fender PU's, to my ears, tend to sound a bit brittle with harsh highs and that characteristic low mid thump. These are a bit more rounded overall, lacking the sharp tonal cut-offs that Fenders possess.
