How can we get good monitoring?

Absolutely, a good relationship with the venue/house guys is just gonna make everyone's gig easier.

How can we get good monitoring?

It sounded to me like there was only one guy there. If that was the case, then the best thing would be monitors-from-FOH. That way he can at least make changes for you, even if it seems awkward to ask for something across the crowd.

First time run through PA - I no likee

+1 Excellent point. In these kind of situations its nice to have one person who has the final say, but sometimes that's not the case. It becomes a impossible situation, cuz if you try to please everyone, then nobody's happy.

Holy Cow what a difference!! (Cables)

+100!! I'm glad to see someone on here gets this. The sound company I work for makes all our own cables, and we have cables from 20+ years ago that still get used on stage in live situations, with no problems. This is why I prefer to just make my own cables.

"your rig or the gig is cancelled"

I work for a live sound company. Many times, when bands are flown in for a one-off, we provide backline for them. If there's an opener, we'll ask the headliner if they're ok with sharing gear, usually the drum kit and bass rig. The bands will all have their own guitars and effects, and share...
