    I had them tuned standard on my 4-string ESP for about three months, and they are pretty nice. I do not like the sound of fresh nickel-wounds, but in my opinion - the Ernies sound better when they are dead. Tension wise, they are one of the heaviest sets I had used.

    As of now, I am not using a preamp. I have been using the 231 at instrument level input with success. As a matter of fact, I can use either output on the 231 (XLR or 1/4") to drive the input on a small combo amp.
