Thanks for the info! Music Man has some of the best finishes out there IMO. Good straps are underrated. You gotta treat yourself with a comfortable, cool looking strap!

Congrats on your new strap  What bass is this? Love the sparkly finish!

Ooh yeah these Bacchus basses have an outstanding reputation and look fantastic (I love a colorful bass). Unfortunately they are very hard to come by in France. I'll keep my eyes peeled for a used one.

Thank you for this thorough answer. It's very interesting that such differences can be found between instruments of a similar make. "Try before you buy" is a great takeaway IMO!

No debate here. I have a P, Stingray and acoustic fretless, just so I can mess with different tones. I just don't get the J tone I want with my current J, which sends me off to a quest for another J. Such a great GAS opportunity ;)

I agree that there is no "right answer" to the issue at hand. Yet posting on TB helped me make up my mind. The simple dialectics of talking about an issue with other people is helpful whatsoever. I'll just keep an eye on nearby classifieds, see it any passive Js pop up, maybe go to the local...

I have played it in passive mode a lot, but I think the pickups might have been designed with the active mode in mind.

I have tried D'Addario Chromes because they are bright for flats too. It improved the tone but that still didn't cut it for me. I also had inharmonicity (out-of-tune harmonics) 9th fret and up on the e-string with these. I have Cobalts on my short-scale stingray and love them. (EDIT...

My Sire v7 sounds meh (to my ears)

This sums it up. I think I am slowly leaning towards selling it and keeping an eye on classifieds for another one. I am indeed afraid of spending money on expensive pickups to end up disappointed. I have already spent quite a few bucks on strings for this bass, to no avail. I try to keep a...

I believe the 2nd gen has a 9'' radius. What pickups are you putting in?

It is the 2nd generation. Does it make a difference tone-wise?

Haha, actually not. I keep it with both pickups and tone full on. Don't care much for other settings on that one bass.

Agree that playing near the bridge is crucial. But the v7 has different electronics from a classic JB, with a pickup blend selector instead of two separate volume controls. I guess the tone knob does behave differently on an active bass too. I don't how much of a difference it makes, but it must...

Thanks for the input! The Rumble is definitely staying, I like the 4-band EQ, EQ presets and low weight. I think I'll do it the other way around, find a passive J to test and bring the amp with me. The bass definitely sounds better to me with slight compression, adds punch without killing the...
