How do I get that tone? Feel the Real - David Bendeth

Not only is this an mind-blowing bassline, it also has that growly honky funky tone that I would love to copy.

What bass, strings, amp/amp sim and playing style could I use to get closer to it? Thanks for your help!

bridge jazz pickup with broken in roundwounds played over the bridge direct into the board. I would start straight in, dry. Possibly into some classic tube compressor plug in with no cab/room modeling.
