I added a pentode/triode switch to a 50-watt Marshall guitar amp, which functioned close enough to a "half-power" switch.

It's not a question of were the master volume is set. An 8x10 putting out 80dB will move far more air than a 1x12 at 80 dB. It's simple physics. And when that increased air movement excites the room itself, you have successfully fscked up your FOH mix.
