I'd look into the Ampeg and Bassman bass amps. There are both new and vintage ones on the market.

I've never had an issue, usually have a big roll of 60/40, I think from Radio Shack.

I think a Weller WP35, is the equivalent to the old light bulb socket one that I use. It's about as basic as I would go.

I like using the Weller with the threaded heating elements. I'm not sure if they still make them. I've always used 60/40. I didn't see anyone mention, you can use steel wool to clean your tip. You don't need to buy any specialty tool.

Have you considered liability issues? Specifically a tall cab/stack with a heavy amp toppling over? Even if it's pushed over, your insurance company needs to defend you in court.
