45-100 is what I would call medium gauge, not light at all. Past that, no idea.

I used to live in Canada and strings definitely lasted a lot longer for me there. I'd never even broken a string there on bass. Happens fairly frequently here, so I'm assuming it's an environmental factor. I usually use d'addario, or fender strings. Sometimes rotos when I can get them.

I usually use very light gauges, 90s or 95s. After that I just leave them out for easy practice and I play reeeally hard. I've got very sweaty hands too, so that adds a lot to my string wear.

You'd be surprised how quickly strings rust and break given daily exposure to humid, salty ocean air. Usually I get a month out of a pack and two or three out of a set of bass strings before the E or G string breaks. I don't usually change them until they break because it's just not economical...
