Favorite mic preamp for DI bass?

+1 on the idea of a 500 series rack. My favorite preamp for pretty much anything, but especially bass is the Classic API VP28. It is a kit, so it takes a bit of time to build, but it's dirt cheap for how good it is. It sounds huge, with clarity and muscle. If building a pre is intimidating...

I'm wanting to start a small studio to record other bands?

As the owner of a multi thousand dollar studio, my best advice would be to not let anyone discourage you. If you love doing it, don't stop if you hit roadblocks. As far as $, ask bands to give you what they can afford / feel is fair at first. You'll figure out what an honest rate is after a few...

For Sale/Trade Fernandes Retrospect Deluxe Bass

I've got a Fernandes Retrospect Deluxe bass (Made in Japan) from the early 2000's up for sale. The finish is a quilted maroon burst, It's got 2 band active EQ (Bass & treble), pickup blend and master volume. It went on tour with me for a number of years, so it's got some dings, but still looks...

    kt77s in an SVT classic?

If you dig the Marshall growl, why not try putting your 2203 in to a proper bass cabinet? It works for Lemmy.. (although his are non master super bass amps, but still). I've personally run a Plexi reissue in to an Eden 410xlt and it sounded awesome. I'd let the SVT do what it does best and leave...

    Ampeg SVT-CL vs. SUNN 2000s

I record & play mostly punk / hardcore / rock, I've got a Sunn (Sorado) and an Ampeg (SVP pre / Demeter Power amp) and I'd say if you're going to pick one; pick the Ampeg. I'm super happy that I've got both, because I feel that they cover different ground, but the Ampeg would be my desert island...

Going to the Studio; Best Mic Combo

From my experience of recording hundreds of punk records, get it sounding good from your amp, mic it with an Electro Voice RE20 (or a Sennheiser 421) through a good pre and compressor and call it a day. The DI is a fail safe if you need to re-amp, but I rarely use much or any of it in the mix...
