Definitely agree that strings need to be matched well with pickups. I’m not a jazz bass guy, but if I was, I’d go for a mid heavy string to balance it out since they’re inherently scooped. I really love stainless steel strings in general with p basses. Would imagine they go great with grabbers too.

I feel like all daddario strings have a nice high-mid bite to them. Maybe not super robust in the low mids, but they help you cut and punch through.

I think daddario has some of the best QC. What other strings have you used in the past? Curious to hear what strings you think sit on the scooped to heavy mid continuum.

I might have to give Sadowky’s a shot. Too bad it doesn’t look like they offer singles.

I’m surprised you got dead strings from daddario. Their QC has never let me down. I liked the SITs a lot when they were fresh, which made me disappointed when I got two dead 100s within three orders.

That’s actually the exact pickup I’m using too. Probably my favorite p pickup. It really wants an aggressive roundwound string. I’ve tried GHS boomers with it, and it’s a little too muddy for my taste since high output pickups could be already shy in the highs and boosted in the lows and mids.

Rotosound might be the most mid-heavy stainless. I think it’s why they’re so unique sounding. I’m starting to see a correlation of the thinner core strings having less mids. Both flex steels and EBs are loose feeling.

I’m a big mid guy too and wasn’t disappointed in their mids. I think they’re brighter than the SITs were but not like a DR. So scooped. From videos, Dunlop Super Bright stainless seem really scooped too.

How would you compare the Bass Grinder and Volt Thrower? I have the Olde Dirty Bass for overdrive and the Bass Grinder for distortion. They’re both awesome but gun to my head, I like the ODB more. More mids and reaction to my playing

Hey all. Just got an Olde Dirty Bass. Sounds pretty rad so far. Would someone be able to explain to me what each toggle position does? There are three left to right positions for both toggles.

And that’s hard to find in a SS string. I used their Blue Steels and Nickel Steels a lot in the 2000s to early 2010s

I really like how DR last and feel, but their overall bass string line is polite sounding, maybe except Lo Riders. I feel the same way with how Daddario’s sound. NYXLs are a little more aggressive, but I’ve never jived with XLs.

They changed silks a lot, but I think in the 2000s, it was more of a silver silk. Maybe even none at all at points. Hard to remember. It was considered their signature series. Essentially a standard hex core nickel round wound, but it had more grit compared to other brands in my opinion.
