Double Bass Looking for right hand pizz workout/etude

Orlando LeFleming's book "Get It Together" has tons of great material for pizz. A lot of it is related to the classical bowing studies, but his book has a bunch of good notes on time feel, swing, etc. It's one of the best books I've come across for pizz technique.

Double Bass Transcribing Ray, Ron, & Paul

for Paul Chambers, I took down "If I Were A Bell" years ago, and it was very instructive. Paul's note choices are going to be way less intuitive than Ray Brown or Ron Carter, and, Paul does sometimes have some shaky intonation in the upper register. Which, is a great reminder that swing matters...

    Double Bass Peter Washington strings?

I just saw Peter Washington play with Bill Charlap this past saturday evening and I'm pretty sure he was using Spirocores. I was surprised, as I thought he'd likely be playing gut, but, def steel. He sounded fantastic, like he always does.

    Double Bass Big Band Playing

I've played in a fair amount of big bands, and arranged for them, too: If it's a straight ahead chart and there's a walking line written, I generally just play the harmony and make the hits; the lines written are usually for students or similar and in my experience not usually written by a...

    foam mute: intonation adjustments?

I have a 90s p-bass with black labella tapewound strings that I dearly love. I really like the sound of having a piece of soft foam just under the bridge, but I've noticed it really wreaks havoc on the intonation. I'm worried the foam is pressing too hard against the strings. What adjustments...

Double Bass Finding a teacher in NYC?

thanks ed! by the way, I have your book and love it! it's funny, the guy that taught me how to play jazz, Ed Paolantonio, was also a student of Tristano's and we did a lot of the exercises he picked up.

Double Bass Finding a teacher in NYC?

Hi, I've recently started playing upright bass, after playing jazz guitar professionally for 20 years. I've been trying to find a great classical teacher that I could study with in NYC, and I'm wondering if anyone on the forum has any recommendations? apologies if this isn't an appropriate...

I just installed hipshot gold lightweight tuners and they make a huge difference! also got a fender '62 reissue pickup and that sounds much better than the stock one. now, if I could only find a 3 screw gold fender bridge, I'd have all gold hardware. any ideas, or am I worrying too much about...

    90s p-bass mod, tuners + bridge?

Thanks Walter! I will be sure to get the lightweight ones. Hipshot makes a lot of different tuners and I was a little confused about which one would be best for my p-bass, so I just emailed them. thanks again for your help. I'm considering a fralin pickup; not cheap; but seems like they are...

    90s p-bass mod, tuners + bridge?

hey y'all, brand new to the forums. I just got a 90s american standard p-bass, and I'd like to get tuners and a bridge for it, preferably gold. I am hoping not to drill if possible. I have a 3 screw, strings through the body bridge, so I don't think a badass bridge will work as a dropin...
